Learning to Feel

For a long time, I didn’t know that I was allowed to have feelings.

I didn’t know I could slow down and process what I felt. In my life, there never seemed to be time for that. I believed my role was simply to appear strong and keep moving forward.

But over the years, I heard the same thing again and again: “I didn’t know you had feelings.” People saw me as someone who was numb like I was just moving through life without emotions.

And in many ways, that was true.

I had learned to push feelings aside so well that I stopped recognizing them altogether. I became someone who simply kept going.

But the more I read and the more I examined myself, the more I realized something important: living without feeling isn’t strength it’s disconnection.

So I decided to try something new. I started paying attention to what I felt and actually labeling my emotions.

When I felt happy, I paused and thought, Oh… this is what happiness feels like.

When I felt sad, I noticed it and said, So this is sadness.

It might sound simple even elementary but for years I didn’t know how to do that. I didn’t know you could name what you felt. I didn’t even realize you could take the time to notice.

Little by little, it felt like something inside me woke up. Almost like I had grown a heart in a place that had been quiet for a long time.

Allowing myself to feel gave me a deeper understanding of myself and of life. It reminded me that emotions aren’t something to hide from they’re part of being fully human.

So if you’re someone who feels numb or disconnected from your emotions, start small. Pause long enough to notice what’s happening inside you.

You might be surprised by what you discover when you finally give yourself permission to feel.
